How does laser tattoo removal work?

1. Tattoo removal lasers direct energy toward the ink in the skin using pulses of highly concentrated colored light beams.
2. The rapid absorption of the light energy fractures the tattoo ink into tiny particles, which is then easily removed by the body’s natural filtering systems.
3. The laser selectively targets the pigment of the tattoo while leaving the surround skin unharmed, causing the tattoo to fade or disappear completely.

The types of tattoos that can be removed by laser are professional, amateur (homemade), traumatic, surgical and cosmetic tattoos.

Can the color of the tattoo ink affect the results of laser tattoo removal?

Yes. Some inks respond better than others. While the black and blue pigments are easier to remove, the green and yellow pigments tend to be more difficult, but usually respond following a prolonged course of treatment

How many laser tattoo removal treatments will I need to remove my tattoo?

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

However, due to the numerous tattoo inks in use today we have no way of knowing which tattoo ink was used or how deeply it was applied making it impossible to predict the degree of laser removal on any given tattoo.

Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?

The majority of patients treated by laser tattoo removal should not develop any scarring. However, it is impossible to guarantee that no scarring will occur given the vast differences between individuals.

How does laser hair removal work?

What is the recovery time?

SmartSkin™ delivers micro pulses of energy, your recovery time is significantly shorter than the fully ablative lasers. These microscopic holes quickly heal within 3-7 days, after which you will be able to apply makeup on the treated surface and return to your normal lifestyle.

If you have a special event coming up, allow 2 months just to be safe.

When can I expect to see results, and how long will they last?

Results can be seen in as little as 4 weeks after the procedure. Additional improvements will continue for several months as the collagen rejuvenation process takes full effect.

With proper skin care and sun protection, results can last for years.

Can SmartSkin™ be used with other cosmetic treatments?

Not on the same day. However, the CO2 laser treatment is a nice compliment to Botox, fillers and the Affirm laser.

What are the medical/cosmetic side effects?

The best way to avoid any complications is to select a good dermatology office with extensive experience in lasers. While complications are rare, the following complications are possible:

• Pain: Most people may feel uncomfortable during treatment due to the measures discussed above. There is discomfort for the first few days after treatment, but Tylenol or Motrin is effective for it.
• Redness: A pink color may persist for 2 weeks to 2 months after the laser treatment. In rare instances, it may last 3 to 6 months. This is more common in patients who have a history of flushing and blushing easily or who already have dilated vessels on the surface of the skin.
• Wound Healing: The CO2 laser causes a superficial wound to the skin that takes approximately 2 to 10 days to heal. The superficial injury of the outer layers of the skin may result in mild to moderate swelling. Crusting is rare but peeling is common. Once the surface is treated, it may be sensitive to the sun for approximately 4-6 weeks.
• Pigment Changes: The treated area may heal with increased or decreased pigmentation. This is rare and occurs most often in darker skin and 2-6 weeks after treatment. Hyperpigmentation usually fades in 3 to 6 months, though rarely pigment changes can be permanent.
• Excessive Swelling: Immediately after laser treatment, there will be swelling of the skin. This is a temporary condition and will resolve over 3 to 7 days.
• Scarring: There is a very small chance of scarring. This includes hypertrophic scars or, very rarely, keloid scars (thick, raised scar formations.) It is important to inform us of prior history of unfavorable healing. To minimize chances of scarring, it is important to follow post-operative instructions carefully. Do not pick!
• Eye Exposure: There is a risk of harmful eye exposure to laser surgery. It is important to keep your eyes closed and have protective eyewear at all times during the laser treatment.
• Infection: Occasional infections can occur. If not treated promptly, these could result in scarring.
• Since every patient is an individual, you may not respond exactly the way other patients do. You also may not be completely happy with the effects of treatment.

What are the reasons NOT to use SmartSkin™?

• Pregnant or breastfeeding
• Medications that increase photosensitivity
• Use of anticoagulants
• Use of Accutane in the last year (vs. 6 months)
• Chemotherapy in the last year
