Sun Spot Removal

What are sun spots?

Skin lentigines, also known as age spots, sun spots or liver spots, are harmless, flat, brownish splotchy areas of hyperpigmented skin which seem to occur spontaneously on the back of the hands, neck and face of men and women over 40 years of age. Sun spots are caused by the skin being exposed to the sun over many years and are an obvious sign of sun damage.

Laser is the treatment of choice

Laser treatment is generally very effective at removing age, liver, sun or brown spots on the skin. It is the treatment of choice for these spots, in fact. The treatment may require two or more sessions to completely remove the spots depending on how many there are and on which area of the body.

Lasers are ideal for removing sun spots because the melanin pigment is designed to absorb light. Almost any color of laser light can be used to take away brown spots. Intense Pulsed Light sources (IPL’s) are also good at removing brown spots.

Is it permanent?

In general, laser removal of age spots is permanent. However, people do sometimes see new spots appear as they go back out into the sun. These are new spots forming as a result of age spots, not a recurrence of the old removed spots.

Sun avoidance is key if you wish to keep your skin free of sun spots.

Mill Creek Skin & Laser offers a variety of options for sun spot removal including skin peels, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy and Affirm™ laser skin rejuvenation which gradually reverse skin damage over a series of treatments.
