Sun Spots
There are various types of spots. Sun spots, age spots, “liver” spots – these are all names for the small brown spots of pigment (melanin) that appear on your face, hands, chest, and other parts of your body.
These spots are caused by photodamage, or sun exposure. These solar lentigines can emerge at any age and on any skin type. Over time, the spots can darken or even grow to become unsightly “splotches.” The best prevention, of course, is daily sunblock SPF30+ year round. If the damage is already done, lasers can help restore even skin tone.
Another type of pigment problem is melasma. Often called the ‘mask of pregnancy,’ melasma appears as a dark ‘stain’ on the skin and can be triggered by hormonal changes. Although doctors have yet to find a cure, a combination of laser treatment and skincare prescription products can manage the condition.
