The SmartSkin CO2 fractional skin resurfacing laser uses small columns of fractionated energy to ablate areas of damage. Tiny microscopic wounds are made and the surrounding healthy skin helps with healing, making new collagen and elastin. The regeneration of new collagen and elastin is also stimulated deep within the dermis, revealing softer, smoother, and younger looking skin.
Our laser is the most advanced, customizable, micro-ablative skin resurfacing laser available. Unlike other systems that have “one-size-fits-all” settings, the SmartSkin laser provides completely customizable treatment parameters to meet patients’ needs and downtime requirements.
At Mill Creek Skin & Laser Center, Dr. Lin personally administers all the SmartSkin CO2 fractional skin resurfacing laser treatments. Dr. Lin can treat skin types I to IV. He is very skilled and knowledgeable in the field, as well as thorough and safe, making him a person you can trust with your treatments.
The best way to avoid any complications is to select a good physician with extensive experience in lasers. While complications are rare, the following complications are possible:
Pain: Most people may feel uncomfortable during treatment due to the measures discussed above, but pain is not much of a component after the treatment. A topical anesthetic will be applied making the procedure more comfortable.
Redness: A pink color may persist for 2 weeks to 2 months after the laser treatment. In rare instances, it may last 3 to 6 months. This is more common in patients who have a history of flushing and blushing easily or who already have dilated vessels on the surface of the skin.
Wound Healing: The SmartSkin CO2 fractional skin resurfacing laser causes a superficial wound to the skin that takes approximately 2 to 10 days to heal. The superficial injury of the outer layers of the skin may result in mild to moderate swelling. Crusting and peeling could happen depending on the degree of treatment. Once the surface is treated, it may be sensitive to the sun for approximately 6 months.
Pigment Changes: The treated area may heal with increased or decreased pigmentation. This is why Mill Creek Skin & Laser Center takes every precaution to make sure the skin is pre-treated with products 2-3 weeks in advance of treatment.
Excessive Swelling: Immediately after laser treatment, there will be swelling of the skin. This is a temporary condition and will resolve over 3 to 7 days.
Eye Exposure: There is a risk of harmful eye exposure to laser surgery. It is important to keep your eyes closed and we always apply protective eyewear at all times during the laser treatment.
Scarring: There is a very small chance of scarring. This includes hypertrophic scars or, very rarely, keloid scars (thick, raised scar formations). It could be avoided with careful laser settings and by having an experienced physician perform the procedure. It is important to inform us if you have a prior history of unfavorable healing. To minimize chances of scarring, it is imperative that you follow post-operative instructions carefully. Do not pick!
Infection: Occasional infections can occur. If not treated promptly, these could result in scarring. Mill Creek Skin & Laser Center requires a pre-op appointment with Dr. Lin to avoid infections from occurring. Any post-treatment concerns will be promptly addressed by Dr. Lin.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Use of anticoagulants
- Use of Accutane in the last 6 months
- Immunocompromised state
- History of bleeding disorders and difficulty healing or keloid scarring
- Treatment is limited by skin color, which can be evaluated at the initial free consultation

Possible normal procedure effects are:
- Some degree of redness and swelling, followed by gradual peeling.
- Itching and/or warm sensation.
- Some skin dryness and tightness.
The intensity will vary based on the treatment parameters used during our SmartSkin CO2 fractional skin resurfacing laser procedure.
If you have a special event coming up, allow 2 months just to be safe.
Because the SmartSkin CO2 fractional skin resurfacing laser delivers micro pulses of energy, your recovery time is significantly shorter than the fully ablative lasers. These microscopic holes quickly heal within 3-7 days, after which you will be able to apply makeup on the treated surface and return to your normal lifestyle. The skin may stay pink for at least another 60 days, but is easy to cover with makeup. It looks like you have just been out in the sun.
Results can be seen in as little as 4 weeks after the procedure. Additional improvements will continue for several months as the collagen rejuvenation and elastin stimulation process takes full effect. With proper skin care and sun protection, results can last for years.
